Women Finish Season On A High Note

Yesterday, the women’s cross country team competed at the NCAA Mideast Regional XC Championships. The meet was at DeSales University – a course the team ran earlier this season. The first time the team ran the course was in early October, where they finished 21st out of 35 teams with 658 points. The meet in October served as a preview for this big meet.

This weekend the women’s race had 371 finishers – making it the 2nd largest women’s race among the 8 different regions (the New England region had 406 finishers). Our women’s team finished with 1108 points and 37th out of 51 complete teams, many other teams competed but did not field full squads. Our first finisher was Faith Thackston. She has been Frostburg’s top finisher in the last 5 meets. Thackston finished in 168th place with a time of 25:09. Laurie Gotte was the team’s second runner across the line, finishing with a time of 25:47 and in 204th place.

The team’s other 5 finishers all covered the course faster than in October. Sarah McCurry was the team’s third finisher and the 227th overall finisher. McCurry’s time of 26:06 was 46 seconds faster than the last time she ran the course. Next to cross the finish line was Michala Garrison. She ran a 27:00 – 36 seconds faster than in October – and finished 267th overall. Rounding out the top 5 was sophomore, Jayla Jones. Jones had an impressive meet – covering the course in 28:03, running 1 minute and 17 seconds faster than she did earlier this season! Her overall place was 295th.

Sidonie Brown was the team’s 6th place finisher and she ran a heck of a race. She finished in 308th place overall with a time of 28:26. Brown’s time is over 4 minutes faster than when she last ran this course on October 8th. The team’s final finisher was Sam Gittere. Gittere crossed the finish line 11 seconds behind Brown and taking 311th place.

The NCAA Mideast Regional XC Championships marks the last meet of the cross country season for the women. Overall, the women had a fantastic season and the coaches are proud of how well they did this year. We’re excited to see what these ladies can do on the track and in the field during the indoor and outdoor seasons! Congrats on a great season ladies!
