Successful First Meet of the Year
This weekend the men’s track & field team competed in the first Indoor meet of the 2016-2017 season. They competed in the Marty Pushkin Open hosted by West Virginia University. In total, we had 39 men who competed. For 16 of those 39 men, it was their first collegiate meet ever. It was a fairly small meet, but it was a good one to start off the year. The coaching staff was impressed with the performances across all event groups. Coach Luy felt it was “a solid start to the season. A number of PRs and some good performances from some newcomers.” It’s a great starting point to the year, and we have high hopes that we’ll continue to see improvements from everyone. Here are some of the highlights:
In the Distance events:
Jacob Rickards crossed the finish line in the 800m run in 2nd place with a time of 2:10.64. Teammates Marcus Linn, Dave Homce, and Kevin Hedgeman finished 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.
In the 3k our men took 1-2-3. Senior Xavier Alvarez lead the way in the 3k – winning it with a time of 10:11.90. Teammate, Brady Dumonchelle crossed the line less than 2 seconds later. Sophomore Phillip Hogan captured 3rd place and running a close to a minute faster than his previous Indoor PR.
Freshman Timmy Wolodkin won the 5k in 17:56.02. Sophomores, Matt Whitley and Zach Talbert finished 2nd (18:06.78) and 3rd (19:34.29), respectively. This meet was the first indoor 5k of Talbert’s collegiate career.
In the Hurdles:
Freshman Tristan Barnett took 2nd in the 60m hurdles, running an 11.69 in the finals.
Forster took 3rd with a time of 11.73 in the finals. In the prelims, he ran a 10.57.
In the Jumps:
Junior Collin Schultz took home the win in the high jump. The winning height was 1.85m – which he cleared on his 2nd attempt.
We went 1-2 in the long jump.
Freshman Xavier Trimble won the triple jump with a leap of 12.57m (the farthest any FSU jumper has jumped since 2013). He also took home 6th place in the long jump with a distance of 5.97m.
Freshman Kevin Hedgeman cleared 3.20m in the pole vault to finish 8th.
In the Sprints:
8 men competed in the 60m dash
3 qualified for the finals: Kevin McCarthy (3rd place), Shamar Nelson (4th place), and Kevon Adams (5th place)
With an injured ankle, junior Malik Harris just missed out on qualifying for the finals. He ran a 7.49 and finished 9th.
7 men competed in the 200m dash
We went 1-2 in the event.
Senior Hossein Hakimi broke into the top-10, finishing 7th with a time of 24.12
8 men competed in the 400m dash
Three men finished in the top-10
Hakimi sprinted to 4th place in a time of 53.50
Freshman Tyriek Charles took home 8th place with a time of 55.86
Sophomore Brad Forster finished just .04 seconds behind teammate Charles for 9th place
Freshman Nick Saveleski ran a 1:23.28 in the 500m to take 5th place overall.
We had 2 men’s 4x400m relays. The A team of Charles, sophomore Christian Healey, freshman Devante Mills, and Hakimi crossed the finish line with a winning time of 3:44.05.
In the throws:
Coming back from a season ending knee injury last year, junior Donovan Burriss took 2nd place in shot put behind a throw of 12.91m.
Senior Kashaud Bowman took 6th place in shot with a distance of 11.87m. Bowman also made his comeback in the weight throw – taking 8th place with a toss of 11.43m.
Freshmen John Kerns and Erik Blautzik made it to the shot put finals. Kerns threw his best throw of the meet in his 2nd attempt of prelims with a distance of 12.68m, earning him 3rd place. Blautzik came out to impress with his first throw (12.17m) of competition getting him a 5th place finish.
Senior Patrick Broussoul won the weight throw on his 2nd attempt of the meet with a distance of 13.29m.
Senior Keith Oelschlaeger took 2nd place in the weight throw behind a PR of 13.18m. He also finished 9th in the shot put with an 11.60m throw.
Sophomore Mike Harley threw 11.89m and took home 5th place.
Standout performances:
There were some standout performances from both returners and newcomers. On the returners side, Shamar Nelson impressed not only on the long jump runway but on the track as well. In his first college 60m dash, he finished 4th (running a 7.27 in both the prelims and finals). On the long jump runway, he lead the field from the start jumping 6.37m on his first attempt. His series was one of the most consistent he’s had since being at Frostburg – all but 1 of his attempts were above 6.00m. Another returner who had a standout performance was Keith Oelschlaeger. He set PRs in both throwing events. He started the day with setting a PR in weight throw – hitting 13.18m on his final throw of prelims. That throw would carry him into finals and give him a 2nd place finish. He came back in the shot put with a 9th place finish with a toss of 11.60m (on his final throw of prelims, again). His throw was not only an indoor PR, but an overall PR in the shot put.
On the newcomers side, there were 2 individuals that stood out to the coaching staff. Kevin McCarthy shined on the track – racing to his first college win in the 200m with a time of 23.53. He also took 3rd in the 60m, running a 7.27 in the finals. Kevon Adams stood out on the track and on the long jump runway. He sprinted to a 5th place finish in the 60m finals with a time of 7.29. Later on in the 200m, he finished runner-up to teammate McCarthy with at time of 23.76. In the long jump, Adams jumped 6.27m on his 2nd attempt of prelims. His jump tied with that of an individual from Alderson-Broaddus, however because Adams was so consistent and hit that 6.27m again he took 2nd place (his 2nd longest jump was farther than the athlete from Alderson-Broaddus).
PRs:
Kashaud Bowman – weight throw (7.30m --> 11.43m)
Patrick Broussoul – weight throw (13.27m --> 13.29m)
Phillip Hogan – Indoor 3k (11:53.55 --> 10:56.35)
Shamar Nelson – Indoor Long Jump (6.00m --> 6.37m)
Keith Oelschlaeger – weight throw (12.66m --> 13.18m)
Keith Oelschlaeger – shot put (10.72m --> 11.60m)
Jon Walton – Indoor Mile (5:59.12 --> 5:36.65)
Brian Webb – 60m (7.92 --> 7.87)
Brian Webb – Indoor 200m (27.99 --> 25.92)
*All of our newcomers also set COLLEGE PRs this weekend.
Congratulations to all that set PRs in just the first meet of the season!
Coach Luy’s Top-10:
For the last several years, we have been keeping track of some of the best performances since Coach Luy took over the track & field programs in the 2007-08 school year. After each meet, we go through the top-10 list and make changes based on the performances from that meet. These lists are only the top-10 lists since Coach Luy took over the programs, beginning with the 2007-08 Indoor season (it is by no means a comprehensive list – our goal is to use these to help create an all-time top-10 list for each team). That is why after each meet we’ll have a section titled “Coach Luy’s Top-10”…and after only the first meet of the Indoor season, we have 8 names to add to those lists:
Xavier Trimble – 2nd in Triple Jump (12.57m/41’3”)
Shamar Nelson – 3rd in Long Jump (6.37m/20’10.75”)
Kevin Hedgeman – 5th in the Pole Vault (3.20m/10’6”)
Patrick Broussoul – 5th in Weight Throw (13.29m/43’7.25”)
John Kerns – 6th in Shot Put (12.68m/41’7.25”)
Keith Oelschlaeger – 6th in Weight Throw (13.18m/43’3”)
Kevon Adams - 7th in Long Jump (6.27m/20’7”)
Timmy Wolodkin – 9th in the Indoor 5k (17:56.02)
Our next meet will be back at WVU on January 14, 2017!
